Paul Spain, CEO of Gorilla Technology, joined Ryan Bridge on Herald Now to explore an emerging concept from US startup Panthalassa: floating data centres in the open ocean, powered by wave energy and cooled naturally by seawater.
Backed by approximately NZ$240 million in funding, these structures stand around 85 metres tall and use the motion of ocean waves to generate power. Internal water movement drives turbines, creating a system that combines renewable energy generation with passive cooling. As Paul explains, this dual approach has the potential to significantly reduce both energy costs and carbon emissions – two of the biggest challenges facing modern data infrastructure.
For cloud-driven enterprises and New Zealand organisations seeking robust, sustainable solutions, international floating datacentres could support compliance with climate regulations while improving resilience by operating beyond local disruptions. However, as both Paul and Ryan note, the potential environmental impacts must be carefully considered.
